There are five compulsory trades in Saskatchewan: Construction Electrician, Plumber, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic, Sheet Metal Worker and Sprinkler Fitter. To work in a compulsory trade in Saskatchewan, you must be either a certified journeyperson or a registered apprentice.

All other trades designated in Saskatchewan are voluntary (or non-compulsory). Apprenticeship and certification are not mandatory to work in voluntary trades.

Once an internationally trained worker has been assessed as a trade qualifer and approved to work in the trade, the employer and apprentice will register a Contract of Apprenticeship with the SATCC. The SATCC will issue a Special Permit allowing the individual to work in the trade while they work toward meeting certification requirements, including attempting the journeyperson certification exam.

No, you can apply for an assessment from any province or country. However, if approved, you must be in Saskatchewan with a Saskatchewan mailing address to be eligible to attempt the exam.

The result letter is not a journeyperson certificate. The results letter will simply indicate one of three things:

• You have been approved to challenge the journeyperson exam once you are a resident of Saskatchewan, OR
• You have not been approved to challenge the journeyperson exam and must apply as an apprentice once you are a resident of Saskatchewan, OR
• You need to provide more information before an assessment can be completed
