1. What is Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeship training is a great way to learn job skills while earning money. It combines hands-on learning where experts in a trade (called journeypersons) pass on their knowledge and expertise to employees (called apprentices) right on the job. This practical training is combined with periods of technical training.

Sask Apprenticeship

One of the questions our SYA team frequently gets asked is “What’s the best trade to get into?” It all depends. It depends on the trade you’re interested in: is the trade currently in high demand? It depends on the aspects of the trade: does it have a residential, commercial, or industrial sector to it? It depends on your work ethic and your goals: how hard do you want to work? Do you want to start a business, work for yourself or work for someone else?

Our SYA Manager Paul gives this advice: “Choose a trade you have a passion for and can see yourself doing for many years. Hone your skills through the apprenticeship training system, then a successful career will follow.”

Our Field Consultant Katilyn presented virtually to folks from the Regina Open Door Society Inc. this morning. Great engagement from all those who attended!

Some popular topics of discussion included the financial supports and benefits available to apprentices. While attending technical training, apprentices may be eligible to receive Employment Insurance as well as the Apprenticeship Training Allowance. Apprentices can also apply for grants such as the Apprenticeship Incentive Grant, the Apprenticeship Incentive Grant for Women, and the Apprenticeship Completion Grant.
